Mammoth Pool, Madera County, CA

This is Mammoth Pool (not the more famous Mammoth Lake) in the Sierra Nevada Mountains taken in September of 2003.  The viewing direction is Southeast looking from Madera County (lower left corner) towards Fresno County (upper right corner), across the San Joaquin river, in California.

John Muir wrote a book in 1894 called The Mountains of California. The first sentence of the first chapter reads:

GO where you may within the bounds of California, mountains are ever in sight, charming and glorifying every landscape.

Do you think it's true that mountains are always within sight in California?  John Muir should know - he probably walked over all of them.
